Ryan's Amazing Adventure

Hi all
This is the note that went home with students today. In case you did not receive it or you would like to share it further, I've posted it on this blog. On behalf of the O'Reilly's, thank you for your support.

Ryan’s Mount Everest Trek and Volunteer Effort
On May 7th, Ryan O’Reilly will be leaving on a 32-day trip to Nepal. I am paraphrasing from the email that Paul and Elsa O’Reilly sent us to highlight Ryan’s quest.

Ryan will be part of a small group of people who will be trekking up Mount Everest to base camp Nepal for 13 days. He has been working with a personal trainer to be ready for this very difficult trek. In addition to the trek, Ryan will be working in the Sindupalchowak district of Nepal, a sacred Buddhist place. This is a region where access to education is limited and most families are supported through subsistence farming, working in India and abroad, or selling their daughters to human traffickers. Ryan will be volunteering in a school gym where he will be teaching gym as well as leading in recreational and physical activities to help improve students’ health. As the O’Reilly’s have said, “This is a trip of a life time for anyone, let alone a 12-year-old boy.”  Here at Clairlea, we are feeling tremendously proud of Ryan for his dedication and enthusiasm and for giving so much of his personal time and effort to such a worthy cause.

How can we help?
The O’Reilly’s would like to send Ryan with cash donations to assist in areas such as textbooks, school supplies, equipment and scholarships. The students in our class yelled an emphatic, “Yes!” when I asked them if they would like to donate to Ryan’s Mount Everest trek and volunteer effort. We are already receiving cash donations from community members and I am extending this out to his friends in our Grade 7 class. We would so love to send Ryan on his trek knowing that our donations are going to such a worthwhile cause. If you are able to support Ryan, I will be gathering cash donations next week and forwarding along to the O’Reilly’s, before May 7th. Thank you for your support and all the best to Ryan in his amazing and self-less adventure. Ryan, our world needs more people like you.

Update

Hi all
We have had a rather (extremely!) busy week.
1. Boreal Shield is due tomorrow.
2. In-class Science assignment - we will work on this for 2 more periods on Monday afternoon and then I will be gathering them in. No part of this assignment is to be done at home. Learning how to manage your class time is important, i.e., working productively during class time to an expected due date.
3. Lit Circle assignment 1 is due on Tuesday. I gather you are enjoying your novels by the amount of reading I'm seeing in the class. Good stuff!
4. Track and Field (again!) tomorrow. The top 8 of every event from yesterday's track and field day will compete with the Grade 7 FI class tomorrow afternoon as they were on a field trip yesterday and were unable to compete. So, you know who you are. Please come dressed in layers with sunscreen and water. It will be cold but sunny.
5. Head Lice forms went home today - make sure someone checks your lid. It's that time of year again!
6. Permission forms went home today for the Into The Woods performance on Wednesday of next week. We will be walking to SATEC.
7. Monday, April 30 is the day for our Hep. B/Meningitis C shots. Don't be absent!

Grade 7 French Immersion
I have not seen you for quite some time due to field trips and track and field. Mme Stempiniak and I will be arranging some double periods of French/English in the next week.

See you all tomorrow.
