Something happens when kids are asked to "talk about their Math", to explain the steps they took to solve a problem. When kids start to develop the Math language to talk about concepts like positive and negative integers and whether temperature increases or decreases the further you move away from zero on a linear number line, or whether the pattern is negative 6, each time, and does that mean a "drop" in temperature, kids develop confidence in their abilities. Being able to talk about the strategies and concepts we used means that we are developing a better understanding of what it is we are doing.
That's what happened today in our Math class.
